FALL 20 2 4 6We are in the heart of a glorious summer although it%u2019s fading much too quickly. I hope you got to do some fun summer stuff like BBQ%u2019s, festivals, fairs, hammocks, swimming and fishing. As the daylight and warmth wanes it will soon be autumn, my favorite time of the year. I love the warm days and cool nights. Except of course for the leaves on the golf course. Please no jokes about lost balls. OK, if you%u2019ve got a really good one send it my way.Speaking of jokes, I saw in the news recently that a Space X rocket exploded in orbit while deploying its load of 20 Starlink satellites. Except it didn%u2019t really explode. According to Space X it experienced an RUD - Rapid Unexpected Disassembly. Don%u2019t you just love our German scientists? Much better than Russia%u2019s German scientists. This got me thinking though that maybe surveyors need to take some lessons here and dabble a little more in the gobbledygook just like the space companies. No sense just coming right out and fessing up to say a busted traverse or missset property corner or forgotten backsight when we could cloak our mistakes in doublespeak. After all , we%u2019ve already got some practice in this. We don%u2019t actually sound out the words in GPS or BLM or EDM. We know what they are. And unbeknownst to a layperson we all understand balls, gun, glass, and pogo. So instead of a misplaced property corner maybe we could call it an UUPSI %u2013 Unexpected Unresolved Positional Station Indicator. A busted traverse could be a MISS. Yea, it%u2019s already called that but now it could stand for a Mathematically Incongruent Situational Setback. I%u2019m sure all of you can do better than this so give it a shot and send me your acronyms. The best one will win %u2026 well, we don%u2019t have any money but how about the undying gratitude of our members. Enjoy every last minute of summer and this issue of your Evergreen State Surveyor magazine. New in this issue is My Office View Today, a collection of project site photos received from our members. I want more. Keep sending me photos of your project sites, meetings and the back end of your trucks.PS - Where do bad rainbows go? Prism. It%u2019s a light sentence, and it gives it time to reflect. nFrom the EditorBy: Ben Petersen, PLSFROM THE MAILBOXDear Ben,It was so great to see you and Lindy in Washington state this year, and we are very thankful for you picking us up to go to Tulalip for the LSAW Annual Convention. Kerima-Gae has been rather reluctant to travel over the past few years due to having clots on her lungs and other mobility problems, but she was so super glad that she decided to come with me to the LSAW AGM in February/March, as well as six extra US states and Canada (Vancouver Island) along the way home. She thoroughly enjoyed the LSAW AGM with her honor as the dinner speaker. To get 650 attendees at any conference is spectacular, especially when you compare this state event to the international FIG Working Week in Ghana which only achieved 900 registrants!I see no surprise in the exceptional number of new members joining up to LSAW because it is run exceptionally well from the office with Crissy and the dedicated and colorful group of Executive Committee which make the procurement of CPD points a fun experience. Such an amazing increase in those joining up flies in the face of all world-wide trends of an ever-aging profession which continues to dwindle in those qualified to practice as Surveyors.Your magazine %u2018Evergreen State%u201d is the equal of the very best in the world and is a real shining example of talent and flair well exhibited by you as the charismatic editor. Our ISNSW magazine %u201cAzimuth%u201d is edited by a great lady, Alana, who also demonstrates an obvious gift for the conveyance of information in a colorful, professional and entertaining way, like yourself. It is rather hard to make me feel humble, but the introductions to my educational sessions given by you and Jonny Warren certainly gave me a shiver of pride up my spine which was most appreciated. I have always regarded Washington as my favorite US state and I hold my honorary membership of the LSAW as one of my greatest honors.Thank you to you and all of the LSAW group for making my life a rewarding pleasure and greater in every way.Best regards from Kerima-Gae and myself,John B.%u00a0%u00a0Me looking at my birth certificate %u2018cause someone asked if I was born yesterday.
